What is whiplash?
Whiplash is an injury resulting from violent force that causes the neck to jerk quickly back and forth. Whiplash can incite a range of injuries including strained muscles and ligaments, sprains, and even broken bones.
Most commonly associated with traffic accidents, whiplash can occur even in low speed collisions. Whiplash can also come from sports injuries or other physical trauma.
Harvard Health Publications notes that, by some estimates, more than a million Americans are afflicted by whiplash in a given year. They also acknowledge that over half of those continue to experience symptoms for over a year after their initial injury. Some even experience lingering symptoms for many years that can disrupt their work or home life.
What are the symptoms?
Frequently, whiplash causes stiffness and pain in the neck, back and shoulders. Pain and inflammation typically result in a reduced range of movement. Headaches, blurry vision, tingling in arms and limbs, and ringing in the ears are other common symptoms of whiplash.
Although whiplash is generally associated with neck pain, the force that causes these injuries can also incite back pain and even mild brain injury. Sufferers may even experience emotional distress or difficulties with cognition. Problems with concentration, memory loss, light or sound bother, insomnia and depression are also possible side effects from whiplash.
In some cases, symptoms appear shortly after an accident. However, accident victims sometimes do not realize the full extent of their injuries until days or weeks later.
Left unchecked, whiplash can cause prolonged and unnecessary discomfort and distress. Pain in the neck, shoulders and back, in addition to headaches and reduced range of movement can become chronic without treatment.
